Goodbye Winter! Welcome Spring!

The last few days of winter linger on. Indeed, winter is dying until to be born again in autumn next year. Winter has had a good run this year, and now it's time for a change. These days , you may hear people nagging " I'm done with shoveling for the winter! The chilly weather outside is boring,...i"; but I'm sure the snow has been overwhelming for folks in its own time and has had its beauty. There were gorgeous sights with snow, like the ones below!i

Yes, amazing indeed! So , do you think that you want to trade snow for sleet for ever???! I'm sure you don't. Then, we'll say i"waiting for you  winter, next year"i, and "Hello spring"! It's time for renewal, rebirth and awakening! Awaken to a world of natural and safe goodness! May its warmth fill your heart and melt away your winter woes...! PARDISi

What happened when the icicle landed on the man's head?i

It knocked him cold.i

An icicle is a long piece of ice that forms when water drips down and freezes. To knock someone cold means " to make someone unconscious by hitting him."i

A: It has been so cold lately! Have you noticed all the icicles hanging down from the rooftops?i

B: Don't talk to me about icicles! I was walking down the street and one of them broke loose from a building! It just missed me! If it had hit me, it probably would have knocked me cold!i

a piece of cake

مثل آب خوردن - آسان

Referring to something as " a piece of cake" is often used, to describe a situation that was easy, or required little effort. How did the term " cake" come to mean " easy"? i

The idea of "cake" being"easy" originated in the 1870's when cakes were given out as prizes for winning competitions. In particular, there was a tradition in the US slavery states where slaves would circle around a cake at a gathering. The most "graceful" pair would win the cake in the middle. From this the term "cake walk" and "piece of cake" come into being, both meaning that something was easy to accomplish. The term was first used in print in 1936 by Ogden  Nash who wrote, "Her pictures in the papers now, and life's a piece of cake." Today the term is commonly used to describe tests at school, or friendly competitions. The expression " as easy as pie" has the same meaning as very easy.i

The exam paper was a piece of cake.i

Persuading him to give us the day off won't be a piece of cake.i

i-Why did the piano student put her head on the piano?i

i-Because she wanted to play by ear!i

To play by ear is to play a musical instrument by remembering a tune you've heard and picking it out on the instrument without reading the music from a page.i

A: Maria, where did you learn to play that tune?i

B: I heard it a couple of times on the radio, and then sat down and picked it out on the piano.i

A: That's marvelous! Have you ever had any formal lessons?i

B: A few, but I don't read music very well. I mostly play by ear.i

i-What happens to a refrigerator when you pull its plug?i

i-It loses its cool.i

The word cool normally means "somewhat cold". To lose one's cool is an expression that means "to become angry and lose control of one's feelings."i

A: Why is the ice cream all melted?i

B: Oh, no! I unplugged the fridge to clean behind it, and I forgot to plug it back in! It should still be cool, though.i

A: Well, it's not! Look at this! Everything in the freezer is ruined!i

B: Don't lose your cool ! I'll go to the store and replace everything.i

In conversation……
When people ask others to repeat information, they say I'm sorry? More often than excuse me?

You're so vain
You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht.
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye,
Your scarf it was apricot.
You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte,
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and…….
You're so vain, You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?
You had me several years ago
When I was still quite naïve.
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair and that you would never leave.
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me.
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee Clouds In my coffee, and …..
Well, I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won.
Then you flew your lear jet up to nova scotia
To see that total eclipse of the sun.
Well, you're where you should be all the time
And when you're with some underworld spy
Or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and……

عکس عکس های زیبا از چهارشنبه سوری

These days, Iranians are counting down to celebrate the last wednesday of the year called Chaharshanbe-Suri from which I have lots of memories from my childhood. Indeed, there is a great change in customs since then. Well, let's see Where it comes from and what its origin is.i

Variant local names include Gūl Chārshamba (Ardabīl) and Gūla-gūla Chārshamba (Gīlān), Kola Chowārshamba (Kurdistan), Chowārshama-kolī (Qorveh, near Sanandaj), and Chārshamba-sorkhī (Isfahan). In Iranian Azerbaijan sometimes it is called Azerbaijani: آخیر چارشنبه (last LastWednesday, and in Azerbaijan Republic it is called Azerbaijani: Od çərşənbəsi (Fire Wednesday).i

,

Chahārshanbe-Sūri : meaning Wednesday Feast, from the word sour which means feast in Persian, or more plausibly, consider sūr to be a variant of sorkh (red) and take it to refer either to the fire itself or to the ruddiness (sorkhī), meaning good health or ripeness, supposedly obtained by jumping over it, is an ancient Iranian festival dating back to at least 1700 BCE of the early Zoroastrian era. Also called the Festival of Fire, it is a prelude to Nowruz, which marks the arrival of spring. The words Chahar Shanbeh mean Wednesday and Suri means red. Bonfires are lit to "keep the sun alive" until early morning. The celebration usually starts in the evening, with people making bonfires in the streets and jumping over them singing zardi-ye man az to, sorkhi-ye to az man. The literal translation is, my sickly yellow paleness is yours, your fiery red color is mine. This is a purification rite. Loosely translated, this means you want the fire to take your paleness, sickness, and problems and in turn give you redness, warmth, and energy.i

Fire, not only in historic Persia, has long been held as sacred among Indians, Europeans and many other cultures. According to ancient Iranian beliefs, Azar (Fire) was the son of Ahura Mazda. Ancient Persians believed in the purity and purifying power of fire. The belief was so strong that, to prove one's innocence, people had to cross through the fire, as Siavash did in Ferdowsi's epic poem, the Shahnameh.i

Another tradition of this day is to make special ajeel, or mixed nuts and berries. People wear disguises and go door to door knocking on doors as similar to Trick-or-treating. Receiving of the Ajeel is customary, as is receiving of a bucket of water.i

There are some other rituals connected to the festival that have almost disappeared nowadays. One of them is Kuze-Shekani (earthenware jar-shattering) in which people put some coals, salt and a very cheap and worthless coin into an earthen jar and then throw it down from the roof into the alley to break. Coal and salt are signs of ill omen and bad luck and a worthless coin is the symbol of indigence. By doing this people drive away misfortunes and bad omens from their homes.i

Fâl-Gush neshini is another custom in which the girls who wish to find a husband or have any other desire to fulfill in the New Year, go out of the house into the streets and hide behind a wall and listen to the conversations of passersby. If what is overheard is positive or optimistic then their wishes will come true and if otherwise, not.i

The other ritual of this night is Qaashoq-Zani (Spoon-hitting). Young girls wrap themselves into a shroud (chador) and then while banging a spoon against a bowl go and stand at the door of neighbors, where the house owner fills their bowls with Chaharshanbe Suri's ajils. A person who receives nothing is believed to expect an unfortunate year. Sometimes young boys don a chador and do this for fun.i

Today only the name remains of many of these customs. Instead various kinds of firecrackers have become part of the celebrations. Unfortunately every year some people are hurt and hospitalized by the fireworks. Chaharshanbe Suri, however, remains one of the most important and joyous national festivals for Iranians around the world.iwwww.iranvisitor.com

i-Because he didn't want to get into hot water!i

When people are in hot water, it means that they are" in a lot of trouble."i

When Bill was late to meet his girlfriend, he knew he was going to be in hot water. when he got to the restaurant, she was sitting and drinking hot tea, and glaring at him very angrily.i

In case / In case of

We use in case to express that we are doing something in preparation for something which might happen.i

Eg:  Take an umbrella in case it rains. i

We use in case of to say what we should do if or when something happens; also after in case of, there should be a noun!i

Eg: In case of fire, leave the building as quickly as possible!i

Athough / Even though

We use although or even though to express a contrast between two things.i

Eg:  Although he is much older than the others, he won the race.i

Even though he's a millionaire, he lives in a very small flat.i

Even though and although can be used in the same way as despite the fact that and in spite of the fact that.i

Eg:  I enjoyed the holiday, even though it rained alot.i

I enjoyed the holiday, despite the fact that it rained alot.i

Learners of English often confuse do and make.i

There is a rough guideline, but no hard and fast rule:i

  • We often use do when we speak about everyday jobs and tasks: do the shopping; do the dishesdo my homework.i
  • We use make when we want to speak about creating something, in particular something which didn’t previously exist: make a cake; make a suggestion; make an offer.i

Here are some examples of when to use make or doi

i-What kind of pool can't you swim in?i

i-A car pool

A pool is a small body of water. It can also refer to a common supply of something, such as money, that can be used by a number of people. For example, when people drive together in the same car to save gas and money, it's called a car pool.i

John and Brittany, along with several of their school friends, were invited for a swim at Garcias' pool. The Garcias' house was far away and the kids wanted to drive together to save gas. They went in two car pools and spent the whole afternoon swimming.i

i-What suit lasts longer than you do?i

i-A lawsuit

A suit is a set of matching clothes that are worn together, especially for business wear. A lawsuit is an action taken in a court to secure justice.i

Mr. Kim was worried. Today he had to appear in court because a lawsuit was being brought against him. Of course, he dressed up in his best suit for the trial so that he would look nice for the judge and jury.i

i-What has a fork and mouth, but cannot eat?i

i-A river

A fork is the pointed tool you use to carry food from your plate to your mouth. But a fork is also the place where a river or a road splits and goes in two different directions. The mouth of a river is where the river enters the ocean.i

A: Look up ahead! There's a fork in the river. Which direction should we take?i

B: Stay to the right. That's the side that leads down to the mouth of the river. We'll be there in about two more hours.i

A: Two hours! Let's get out of the boat then, and find a place to eat. I'm hungry, and the only mouth I care about right now is mine!i

B: All you ever think about is a knife and fork...i

Splashed on the canvas.i

Displaying our chapter.i

We were transformed into a soul,i

Floating around within our dimensions.i

Intonation

English tag questions can have a rising or a falling intonation pattern.  As a rule, the English rising pattern is used when soliciting information or motivating an action, that is, when some sort of response is required. Since normal English yes/no questions have rising patterns i iii (e.g. Are you coming?), these tags make a grammatical statement into a real question:i

  • You're coming, aren't you?i
  • Do listen, will you?i
  • Let's have a beer, shall we?i

The falling pattern is used to underline a statement. The statement itself ends with a falling pattern, and the tag sounds like an echo, strengthening the pattern. Most English tag questions have this falling pattern.i

  • He doesn't know what he's doing, does he?i
  • This is really boring, isn't it?i

  •  Usually, we use negative tags with positive sentences and positive tags with negative sentences, but this may vary in some regions. In North East Scotland, for example, positive to positive is used when no special effect is desired:i
  • He was the best in the class, was he? (rising: the speaker is challenging this thesis, or perhaps expressing surprised interest)i
  • He was the best in the class, wasn't he? (falling: the speaker holds this opinion)i
  • Be careful, will you? (rising: expresses irritation)i
  • Take care, won't you? (falling: expresses concern)i

Sometimes the same words may have different patterns depending on the situation or implication.i

  • You don't remember my name, do you? (rising: expresses surprise)i
  • You don't remember my name, do you? (falling: expresses amusement or resignation)i
  • Your name's Mary, isn't it? (rising: expresses uncertainty)i
  • Your name's Mary, isn't it? (falling: expresses confidence)i

On the other hand, the adverbial tag questions (alright? OK? etc.) are almost always found with rising patterns. An occasional exception is surely.i

What is a doughnut?i

Someone who is crazy about money

A doughnut is a fried cake shaped like a ring. in slang, dough also means "money", and nut means " acrazy or eccentric person." if you are a nut for something, it means that you are extremely enthusiastic about it.i

In the United States, "buck" is used instead of "dollar" in spoken and informal language.i

A: Richard, you are looking well. How about getting some coffee with me?i

B: Coffee and doughnuts sounds great! So, what have you been up to lately? I haven't seen you for a while.i

A: Actually, I've been working around a clock in my new business.i

B: Oh, you're after the big bucks, huh? I never thought you'd be so dedicated to money!i you're becoming a real "doughnut"!i

A: Yeah, and a healthnut, too. I don't eat doughnuts anymore- they have too much fat!i

as broad as it is long

همان آش و همان کاسه

Its meaning is that the arguments on both sides [of whatever is under discussion] are of equal value, or that two ways of going about doing something will bring about the same result, so that neither is to be preferred to the other.i

Since both jobs pay 7$ an hour and are equally boring, it is about as broad as it is long whether I take one or the other.i

of the first water

درجه یک -  از بهترین کیفیت

Means of the finest quality. This idiom comes from the gem trade and refers to a grading system for diamonds and their color or luster compared to the shininess of water.  The clarity of diamonds is assessed by their translucence; the more like water, the higher the quality. This comparison of diamonds with water dates back to at least the early 17th century.i

The first water in Diamonds means the greatest purity and perfection  of their complexion, which ought to be that of the clearest drop of water. When Diamonds fall short of this perfection, they are said to be of the second or third water, &c. till the stone may be properly called a coloured one.

Michael Jordan is obviously a basketball player of the first water who would be of enormous value to any team.i

Here are some verbs that are used in statistics although we can use them in several other situations, too.i

The difference between rise and raise

Rise is an intransitive verb( it never has an object); We can say something rises for example:  smoke rises , prices rise , inflation rises

i-Where can you find the largest diamond in the world?i

i-On a baseball field!i

A diamond is a beautiful, clear stone used in jewelry, but it is also the name of the playing field in the game of baseball. A baseball diamond is shaped something like the stone.i

Athough the most perfect diamonds are mined in far-off lands, in America there are diamonds that are much bigger and more precious. Any American can tell you that these diamonds are found on a baseball field!i

i-How do you make seven even?i

i-Take off the s!i

Seven is an odd number: that is, it can't be divided by two. The opposite of an odd number is an even number.i

Confusing words: wrong, wrongly, wrongfully

As dictionaries tell us, the word wrong means ‘incorrect’. There’s nothing difficult or confusing about that, is there? Well, providing wrong is an adjective there isn’t (the wrong day, the wrong number, etc.).i

The trouble starts when we use wrong as an adverb and people start saying that it should be wrongly because adverbs always end in -ly. That’s true with many adverbs but in fact it IS acceptable to use both wrong and wrongly as an adverb. Here are two instances:i

If we want to sound less formal:i

  • He pronounced my name wrongly. [more formal]i ✓
  • He pronounced my name wrong. [less formal] i

Wrong can be used as an adverb instead of wrongly when it comes after a verb:i

  • It was spelt wrong. ✓ (also spelt wrongly = more formal)i

or after the object of a verb:i

  • He spelt the word wrong. ✓  (also spelt wrongly = more formal)i

! We cannot use wrong as an adverb before a past participle:i

  • His name was wrongly speltwrong spelt

or before a clause beginning with that:i

  • The newspaper stated wrongly that the company planned to open new offices in Paris. stated wrong that

Wrongfully

So how do we use wrongfully?i

Wrongfully is used in formal legal statements, as seen in these examples:i

  • He was wrongfully accused of murder. ✓ (They accused him but he was found not guilty.)i
  • He was innocent, so he was wrongfully imprisoned. ✓ (He was sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit.)i

We also use wrongfully with words like convicted and dismissed.

The most formal way of expressing ‘not exactly’ is approximately; the most common in spoken English is about.i

Here’s a list of eight words and phrases that we can use, with example sentences:i

One of the most important factors in learning English is  pronunciation, for it is the first thing the audience realize about a speaker at the very beginning of speech. So, it is said that the most prestigious speakers have great pronunciation, and poor accent may lead in being known as a less knowledgable person in the field of English language learning or even taching in spite of being  very knowledgable and experienced.i

In order to improve your pronunciation and accent, you can take the following tips into account.i

a) Turks (Turkish People) are well known to be the most qualified people who can pronounce English as well as native speakers due to the variety of vowels in their language; however, they must be careful in order not to transfer the pronunciation of their first language in to English. The most troublesome sounds are( ch, j, and th). Be sure that you are producing them in a correct way.i

b) In order to be certain about your accent and pronunciation, try to imitate those who are successful in speaking. Also, try to benefit from listening to English conversations, then record your voice while practicing the conversation. By listening to your own voice, you can notice the areas of difficulties for you.i

c) Practice, practice, nad practice since there is the most famous saying that practice makes the perfect. Try to practice in front of a mirror while pronouncing special kinds of words in order to see the shape of your mouth and lips when producing those sounds, because each sound has particular features that must be recognized in pronunciation.i

Crazy English

Here is a terrific poem I have found which shows the unbelievable oddness of English language

Unfortunately, no-one seems to know the name of the genius who composed this fabulous poem about the craziness of the English language:

The English Lesson

We’ll begin with box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox should be oxen, not oxes.
Then one fowl is goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a whole lot of mice,
But the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be pen?
The cow in the plural may be cows or kine,
But the plural of vow is vows, not vine.
And I speak of a foot, and you show me your feet,
But I give a boot… would a pair be beet?
If one is a tooth, and a whole set is teeth,
Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth?

If the singular is this, and the plural is these,
Why shouldn’t the plural of kiss be kese?
Then one may be that, and three be those,
Yet the plural of hat would never be hose.
We speak of a brother, and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.

The masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine she, shis, and shim.
So our English, I think you will agree,
Is the trickiest language you ever did see.

I take it you already know
of tough, and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble, but not you
on hiccough, through, slough and though.
Well done! And now you wish, perhaps
To learn of less familiar traps?
Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird.
And dead; it’s said like bed, not bead!
For goodness sake, don’t call it deed!

Watch out for meat and great and threat,
(They rhyme with suite and straight and debt)
A moth is not a moth in mother,
Nor both in bother, broth in brother.
And here is not a match for there,
Nor dear and fear for bear and pear,
And then there’s dose and rose and lose –
Just look them up – and goose and choose,
And cork and work and card and ward
And font and front and word and sword.

And do and go, then thwart and cart.
Come, come, I’ve hardly made a start.
A dreadful language: Why, man alive,
I’d learned to talk when I was five.
And yet to write it, the more I tried,
I hadn’t learned it at fifty-five.

[An alternative version quotes the final couplet as:

And yet to write it, the more I sigh,
I'll not learn how 'til the day I die.]

What a fabulous poem!  But such a shame no-one knows the author/s.   ,
