Tips for the TOEFL® exam

• The TOEFL exam takes several hours to complete. Be prepared!

Listening

• Read the instructions and questions carefully before you listen.
• Note taking is allowed. You should practice this.
• Remember, one lecture is spoken with a British or Australian accent
• Try to get an idea of the situation. Who are the speakers? Where are they? Why are they speaking?
• In some questions a portion of the lecture or conversation is replayed so you don't need to rely on memory of what was said.
• Listen for 'signpost words' such as however, although and finally. They help you to anticipate what the speaker will say.
• For some questions you will need to understand the speaker's attitude. Listen to voice tones and other cues to determine how the speakers feel about the topic.

Reading

• Remember, you will be reading academic texts, so learn academic vocabulary
• Skim through each text to try to get a basic understanding of what it is about. What is the text about? Who was it written for?
• Carefully read the title and any sub-headings.
• What is the main point of each paragraph? Each paragraph contains a single main idea. The questions will focus on these main ideas.

فعل مفرد + اسم جمع + the number of

فعل جمع + اسم جمع + a number of

مثال:

The number of books is not enough......... تعداد کتابها کافی نیست .

A number of books have been stolen ......تعدادی از کتابها سرقت شده اند .

حروف انگلیسی A,B,C,D در املای انگلیسی هیچ یک از اعداد 1 تا 99 دیده نمی شود؟

حرف D برای اولین بار در عدد 100 بکار می رود (Hundred)
حروف A,B,C در املای انگلیسی هیچ یک از اعداد 1 تا 999 دیده نمی شود.

حرف A برای اولین بار در املای عدد 1000 دیده می شود (Thousand)

1933    Born in Mazinan, a suburb of Mashhad, Iran.

1948  Membership in the “Centre for Propagation of Islamic Truths”,founded by his father Mohammad-Taqi Shariati.  He was a scholar ofQoranic interpretation who had left the official clerical duties foreducational work.

 1952  Finishing Middle School; Teaching Secondary school and organizing"Islamic Student Associations", Arrested because of participation in anti-dictatorial demonstrations.

1953    Joining the “National Resistance Movement”.

1954 Receiving High School diploma; Translation of the book“High Moral Models,” written by Kashifal-Qeta.

1955   Start of studies in the Department of Literature in MashhadUniversity; Translation of the book “Abu-Dhar, the God-WorshipingSocialist” written by Jodatal- Sehhar, and the pamphlet titled “Thehistory of Evolution of Philosophy”.

1957Arrested along with 16 other members of “NationalResistance Movement”.

1959 Receiving the top place in the University and earning a scholarship to continue his education in France; Collaboration with a branch of“National Liberation Front for Algeria” (F.L.N).

1960   Getting to know Fanon personally and translating some of his work.

1961    Political activities as a member of the National Democratic oppositionand the “Iranian Student Confederation;” Publishing the oppositionNational-Front journals of “Iran Free” Press and “The Front Thought.”  Fanon discourse for the first time was introduced to theIranianrevolutionary intelligentsia in the latter publication; Arrest atthe student demonstration in solidarity with Patrice Lumumba’smartyrdom on Jan 17^th in front of the Belgian Embassy in Paris; Discussions with Guioze (Togolese intellectual) in Cite prison ofParis.

1962  Education and research in sociology and history of religions;attendance in L. Massignon, J. Berque and G. Gurvich lectures; Acquaintancewith J.P. Sartre and thethe publication of Al-Ahmad’s  “Westomania” in Iran.

1963Receiving a Ph.D. in literature under G. Lazard’s supervision.

1964   Return to Iran and immediate arrest at the border.

1965-72Teaching in various high schools and Mashhad University;Publication of the literary  pieces “Desert” and lecture series“Islamology” (Mashhad), and giving lecturers in universitiesthroughout the  country, especially in H. Ershad Institute in Tehran, later  closed down by the Shah Regime at the request of aconservative segment of the clergy; banning his lectures and publications.

1973-75 Solitary confinement for 18 months in Savak (Shah’s secret police) prison; Release from jail due to Algerian president’s request,homebound after release.

1977  In May, Succeeded in leaving Iran by using his middlename, but his wife and eldest chid were taken as hostage andwere prevented departure; Suspicious death in Southampton,England, in June.

It has been known to be a way of showing respect, good manners , and an expression used by a true gentleman. yet most didn't think about asking where it come from, or the story behind " Ladies first."

In the rush moment, the man did it and drown. The lady was deeply looking at him as he was ‘sinking’. The man was dead. It was the lady’s turn to follow him to live together underneath, as they agreed. But she soon broke her promise.
Her promise was to throw herself and she did, but back to the village instead of the sea.

From that day on men always asked women to go first when it comes to anything.
